Hardboard Siding

Hardboard siding has been around far longer than any other type of siding material.  Many homes built in the 80’s and 90’s are constructed of hardboard siding.  It remains one of the most popular siding choices for homes today.  Hardboard siding is a low-cost alternative to wood and concrete-based siding. It offers a classic, traditional appearance, and comes available in a variety of styles to suit homeowner’s various tastes.  The one main caution of hardboard siding—it must be properly maintained (yearly inspections and related repairs) to prevent damage.

As with any siding material there are pros and cons.  Here are some of the benefits and drawbacks to using hardboard siding on a home:

  • Relatively inexpensive
  • Classic, traditional appearance
  • Offers versatility in most applications
  • Easily installed
  • When stained or painted and sealed properly, the material resists cracks, surface variations and moisture infiltration.
  • Hardboard can hold up for decades when installed and maintained properly.
  • The primary complaints against hardboard siding are associated with environmental and sustainability issues, as well as weather resistance concerns.  These may be easily remedied with the proper stain, sealant and install techniques.
